The wrong device, and the brigade turning up
Two things nearly every fire engineer has done on a walk test: set off a device that wasn’t on test, and left the ARC output live so the brigade turned up to a routine test. Neither is carelessness. It’s what happens when the only thing you can see is the device in your hand.
Walk testing is routine. You put the system into a state where you can trigger detectors without evacuating the building, then work through every device and confirm each one reports correctly to the panel. It’s the only way to prove a life-safety system actually works.
To do it, you put zones on test so detectors self-reset and nothing escalates, and you take the sounders — and usually the ARC and ancillary outputs — out of service while you work. Standard practice. The trouble isn’t the method. It’s that for the length of the test, you can only really see the device in front of you.
Why the whole system goes on test
Plenty of engineers put every zone on test, not just the one they’re working on — and there’s a good reason. Addressing and zoning aren’t always what the as-fitted drawing says. A device added during a refit, a head swapped and re-addressed, a labelling error from day one: trigger something mapped to a zone you didn’t put on test, and the panel does exactly what it’s designed to do. Full alarm.
Putting the whole site on test is the safe move precisely because you can’t fully trust the zoning until you’ve checked it. Which is the first problem in a nutshell — you’re testing the labels and the zones at the same time as you’re relying on them.
Mistake one: the device that wasn’t on test
You’re halfway round. You trigger a detector and the sounders go off. For whatever reason — wrong zone, added later, an isolate that didn’t take — that device wasn’t on test. Best case, you reset it before anyone moves. Worst case, a building starts to file out, or the responsible person is on the phone asking why the alarm’s sounding. Every engineer reading this has done it at least once.
Mistake two: the brigade turns up
The other one stings more. You’ve disabled the sounders, but the ARC output is still live — or it goes back on before the panel’s fully reset — and a test activation gets passed to the monitoring centre as a real signal. The first you know about it is a fire appliance pulling onto site. Unwanted fire signals cost money, they count against the premises, and they’re exactly the kind of thing a client remembers.
Both mistakes come from the same blind spot. While you’re walking the building, nobody — including you — has a clear, live view of what’s actually on test, what’s still live, and what the panel is doing on the other side of the site.
Seeing the whole system while you test
